Getting baby clothes can cost you a fortune, specially when it turns out you didn't need it. In this post you will find what you should absolutely get and what not to spend your hard-earned money on.
First of all never say no to hand-me-downs they can be a life saver! Specially in the first year your baby will grow a lot so you will end up spending a lot of money on clothes.
Don't bother buying clothes in the size newborn, most babies will only wear this size for a few weeks, so it's an unnecessary purchase and you're basically just throwing money away. Instead stick to 0-3 months.
One of the things you will definitely need are vests, they are an essential. They are just a staple that all newborns wear. In the summer it could be all you need, if it's a hot summer. And in the winter it can be used for layering and keeping your baby warm. If you don't mind doing a lot of washing then you can get away with buying a pack of 7. However you should probably buy more, as you will be using more than you think!
Something you don't need are scratch mitts, they are just impossible to keep on your baby's hands. Babies wriggle and move their arms a lot so those scratch mitts are not going to stay on your baby's hands for longer than a few seconds. Instead use socks, they work a lot better, because they go further down the arm than the mitts. And if you use sleepsuits they often have scratch mitts build in.
Sleepsuits are an essential too. They are the outfit your baby will probably wear the most in the first few months. Yes, the poppers are a nightmare but you will get used to them and in the end do them in your sleep. If you are struggling with the poppers you can get sleepsuits with a zip.
Baby jeans, don't bother! They are just not practical. They can be very difficult to get off specially when you have a very messy nappy to deal with. Stick instead to leggings or jogging bottoms, a lot less hassle.
Once your baby starts teething I recommend you get some dribble bibs. My son started getting teeth when he was 5 months old and there was a lot of dribble running down his chin, this caused him to get a rash on his neck. The dribble bibs stop this from happening, such a simple solution!
If your baby doesn't have a lot of hair, then you should consider buying some hats. My son had, and still has, lots of hair so I didn't need hats. However I know from families I've worked for that baby heads can get cold very quickly if there isn't a lot of hair. So a hat will keep them warm and protected.
There are a few seasonal must haves that you will need. Depending on when your baby is born you might need either some cardigans, if your baby is born in the spring or autumn. And if you are expecting a winter baby then you will need to buy a pramsuit for when you are taking your baby out and about.
It doesn't really matter if you dress your baby in comfy clothes that may not look great, people will still say your baby is cute, so don't worry about it. In the beginning it's all about practicality!
